A
big influence and a fantastic group. Wire
are one of the more influential bands for us. Mostly for their minimalistic
punk-art-pop in the beginning, but also for their more dance-pop-avantgarde
style towards the end.
There is always something interesting going on in the mind of Jack Dangers.
The dub-techno-dance audio soup he cooks in Meat
Beat Manifesto is one of the most interesting things happening
Everything you ever wanted to know about one of the greatest bands of
all times, or at least a start for those who want to find out anything
about one of the most entertaining bands in rock:
The Cramps. There's really no other band like them.
There really is only one true festival in Scandinavia and it's the Roskilde
festival. It's cool to move around on the site and check out the bands
you saw, the bands you missed and the bands you wished you knew were there.
The punk explosion gave the chance to a lot of bands that weren't punk,
but had an edge and a style that made them fit right in. The Stranglers
had their own kind of abrasive attitude. They mixed Doors-like organs
and an evil-spirited bass to create a monster that would not take orders
from anyone. At the Rat's Lair
you can find out everything about them.
The manic moanings of Mr. Mark E Smith have been worrying the world since
the late seventies, and still the
Fall create a stir like few other bands. If you wanna know about the
band that put the lo in the lo-fi; check them out.
Applause for the wonderful Scottish author Iain
Banks. He makes his own worlds in his science fiction (the Culture),
but is equally entertaining when he writes usual fiction.
I've got to confess; First I saw the movie, then I read the book. Fight
Club knocked me out, and the book's better than the movie! Check out all
the other great books Chuck
Palhniuk has written. He's amazing!
Do you have
an opinion? Many say they do but few have as much opinions as Maddox.
Check out but get ready to be offended.
There are record companies that make a difference. Domino
is one of them. With a roster including Clinic, Mouse on Mars, Royal Trux
and Pram, they are one of the most important labels going at the moment.
Make a visit and get enlightened.
Another great
and groundbreaking label is Warp
records. I really don't know what to say about them that's not been
said, so I'll say nothing.
My way of
supporting the independents in America is by buying my records from Midheaven
mailorder. They've got what I need and some more and also a little
information about the artists.
The American author William S
Burroughs was way ahead of his time. That doesn't mean his books aren't
entertaining, but they're twisted. His life was as fascinating as his
books. He's a big influence for many different parts of the "counter-culture".
Check him out.
One of the great bands of this day and a modern day marriage between The
Cramps and DEVO. At the Man or Astro-man
Intergalactic Interface you can find out everything about their extraterrestrial
antics.
If you liked the movie Bladerunner, you really should read the book it
was based on; "Do androids dream of electric sheep?" by Philip
K Dick . His books are at their worst entertaining, and at their best
totally mindboggling.
At Tangents - "the home
of Un-Popular Culture on the World Wide Web", you can find out everything
you didn't know you wanted to know. The writers, Kevin Pearce, Rob Lo,
Alistair Fitchett and others, are passionate about forgotten bands like
Bush Tetras, June Brides, and Liliput and share their thoughts about subjects
like the importance of libraries and the making of compilation tapes.
Well worth a visit.
Get grinded under the wheels of the roaring psychobilly engine of the
Reverend Horton Heat.
When you hear his gospel and feel the beating rhythms pulsating through
your body, you too will be saved.
Charles Mingus was a
strange bird in the flock of jazz musicians. He drew his influences from
both classical music and folkmusic, but it doesn't sound like either.
Only for those with open minds.
Slim
Gaillard was an entertainer and a jazzmusician like no one else. With
tracks like "Cement mixer" how can you go wrong? |
